I love to travel, but The Wiz took me someplace far away - to a place where any and everything is still possible.
Be it ruby slippers or easing on down the road, I love the land of Oz. I found myself unexpectedly excited to watch NBC’s live version of the 70’s classic, and my excitement only grew as details emerged.
NBC’s other live productions had failed to maintain my attention, and I often forgot to even tune in. But, The Wiz was different. My social media pages had come alive for Dorothy and her eclectic squad, and as 8pm rolled around, I was perched in front of my television with peppermint malt balls and soda in hand – you can’t watch a good ole musical without some snacks, after all.
And, I am happy to say that I was not disappointed. From the costumes, to the dancing, to the casting, to the musical arrangements – I was there for it! My favorite visual element of the musical was the Emerald City – if I was a club girl, I’m sure I would have loved to saunter on into that party.
Other than the amazingly beautiful Emerald City, Uzo “Crazy Eyes” Aduba’s amazing turn as the Good Witch proved that gold is the new black – I just loved her costume.
I also heard Ms. Mary J. Blige slip a little cuss word into the musical, but her throwback Mary two-step gave my heart a little nostalgic boost.
The entire cast and crew did fantastic!
